Smart Consumer Workshop develops consumer education knowledge and scam awareness in primary and secondary school students. This workshop allows students to explore physical and digital transactions in a safe and responsible environment. Through interactive simulations, they navigate real-world scenarios, from online payments to physical self-checkout using PayNow.
Our workshop equips students to navigate digital transactions safely and confidently. At the end of the workshop, they will develop mindful spending habits, create a balanced food plate, recognise scams, and sharpen their critical thinking skills to adapt confidently in a rapidly evolving digital world.

The workshop is structured around three interactive stations, each focused on a distinct learning theme.
At the beginning of each station, students are introduced to key concepts through a brief overview. They then engage with the station’s activities, applying the concepts in practical scenarios. After completing each station, students receive a detailed debrief to reinforce their understanding of the tasks and outcomes.
To wrap up, a final debrief reinforces key learning points and strengthens understanding of digital transactions.
The workshop runs for 1.5 hours by default, with flexible options to extend to 2 hours or shorten to 1 hour to suit your schedule.
This workshop is designed for primary and secondary students who want to develop important digital transaction skills and make informed, responsible consumer choices. It provides a practical and engaging learning experience to help young learners recognise scams and make safe, thoughtful purchases.
We use our learning application simulate real-world shopping experiences, providing students with an immersive and hands-on approach to learning. Students complete assigned purchases by scanning barcodes for self-checkout, making PayNow payments, and simulating online purchases with debit cards. Along the way, they stay vigilant to identify and avoid scams. This interactive approach transforms learning into an engaging, hands-on journey toward making informed and responsible consumer decisions.
Scams & Consumer Education is the ability to make informed decisions and take responsible actions when navigating consumer choices and digital transactions. Having a strong foundation means being able to recognise scams and make mindful spending decisions. It empowers individuals to take control of their consumer habits, think critically, and make choices that support a balanced, healthy, and sustainable lifestyle.
The idea behind this workshop began in 2010, when the founder of SmartCo collaborated with Dr Koh N. K. from the National Institute of Education (NIE) to develop MShopper, a mobile app simulating real-life shopping for primary and secondary school students. Previously run by NIE, the programme introduced learners to financial literacy and Elements of Business Skills (EBS) through interactive, decision-based activities in an authentic consumer environment.
The current Smart Consumer Workshop builds on this proven foundation, retaining MShopper’s core principles while integrating modern digital payment trends and consumer behaviours. Years of experience have refined the workshop to reflect how purchasing decisions and transactions take place in today’s digital economy.
