Smart Sustainable Workshop develops sustainability skills in secondary school students. This workshop allows students to explore real-world climate challenges and their impact on Singapore today. Through a simulated escape room combining augmented reality and collaborative group activities, they experience pressing issues such as pollution, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gases, and rising sea levels.
Our workshop addresses pressing environmental challenges that impact Singapore today. At the end of the workshop, students will develop 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, communication, and global awareness. They will understand their role in building a more sustainable future, recognise that everyone has a part to play, and learn how scientific understanding supports climate adaptation and responses to environmental challenges.
Apply the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) in daily life.
Understand how volunteerism supports communities.
Explore Singapore Green Plan and how individuals can contribute.
Learn how renewable energy sources support a sustainable future.
Learn how human actions impact endangered species.
Recognise the role of conservation in maintaining biodiversity.
The workshop is structured around four interactive stations, each exploring real-world environmental issues. Three stations use augmented reality (AR) to provide immersive learning experiences, while the fourth features a collaborative trading activity that emphasises communication and teamwork. Each station includes a mini-briefing to set context and a short debrief to reflect on the learning outcomes.
To wrap up, a final debrief reinforces key sustainability concepts and encourages personal reflection on climate action.
The workshop runs for 1.5 hours by default, with flexible options to extend to 4 hours or shorten to 1 hour to suit your schedule.
This workshop is designed for secondary and post-secondary students who want to understand environmental challenges and their role in building a sustainable future. It provides a hands-on learning experience that builds critical thinking and practical sustainability skills applicable to everyday life.
We use iPads and augmented reality (AR) to immerse students in real-world sustainability challenges. In teams, students scan AR markers to solve puzzles and discover passcodes that unlock the simulated escape room. At one station, they collaborate with other groups to collect a set of digital cards to advance. Teams can scan other groups’ digital cards using the iPad to complete their set faster. This interactive approach turns learning into an engaging, hands-on journey, helping students develop practical sustainability skills they can apply in everyday life.
As an optional hands-on extension of the workshop, students work in teams to build a wind turbine using reused materials, aiming to generate the most power. Facilitators measure each turbine’s performance with dedicated sensors, allowing teams to compare and refine their designs. The activity develops teamwork and collaboration while giving students a practical understanding of renewable energy and how it is generated and harnessed in real-world applications. Students also learn the value of reusing materials, discovering how creative repurposing can reduce waste, conserve resources, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Sustainability is the practice of meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It involves making choices that balance environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic well-being. By understanding sustainability, individuals can make informed decisions about energy use, consumption, waste, and conservation, contributing to a healthier planet and a more resilient society.
The Smart Sustainable Workshop was developed in collaboration with school subject experts to ensure alignment with the content taught in schools. We explore ideas with teachers to enhance learning and refine activities, incorporating feedback from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment to ensure relevance and impact. This expert-led approach ensures that the workshop provides meaningful, practical, and curriculum-aligned sustainability learning experiences for students.
Empower your students to develop smart sustainability skills through interactive, hands-on learning experiences.
